Within a network of hallowed caverns, the Dambulla Cave Temples a UNESCO World Heritage site contain more than 150 ancient Buddha statues and elaborate murals. Nestled among exquisitely conserved art and architecture these caves which date back more than 2000 years provide a calm and spiritual experience. The highlight of today’s adventure is climbing the Sigiriya Rock, which contains the magnificent fortress that draws the bulk of visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The distinctive enormous lion paws guard the steps leading to the top, which once held the monarch’s palace. A little distance up the mountain are the well-known Sigiriya Frescoes, or rock paintings, which are said to be among the world’s oldest. Then have an informative guided tour of a spice garden in Matale. Discover how spices you’ve used to season your meals at home, as well as a variety of other tropical plants you’ve heard of or used, are grown. In the afternoon, go on an exhilarating jeep safari through Minneriya National Park, home to the sector’s largest known population of Asian elephants.
